Island Advocacy

The Conservancy joins together with conservation coalitions comprised of communities, government entities and partner organizations seeking to identify and monitor environmental threats. These coalitions have focused on the following environmental issues:

Long Island Sound LNG project - Broadwater
Monitoring the proposed facilities that threaten the ecology and recreational use of Long Island Sound. On April 10, 2008 New York State's governor announced the decision to block construction of the facility. See more about Broadwater here.

Dredged Material Disposal
Protecting Long Island Sound by working to eliminate open water disposal of excessively contaminated dredged material and seeking economically viable alternative technologies for alternate disposal of contaminated dredged material.

Plum Island
As a member of the Plum Island Community Forum, the Conservancy helps oversee environmental and security standards at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center.

Long Island Sound Stewardship Initiative (LISSI)
As a member of the Long Island Sound Study, the Conservancy supported the formation in 2000 of the LISSI and its subsequent legislation in 2004 and 2005. Fishers Island coastline was selected as one of 33 inaugural stewardship areas.

Lobster Protection
The Conservancy engaged in a legal battle to protect the local lobster industry from a rapidly diminishing lobster supply caused bydisease and over-fishing by declaring a conservation zone for lobster protection. Unfortunately, the courts did not support this initiative.
