Accomplishments of the Conservancy
1985: Non-toxic mosquito control program established.
1980-1985: Conducted water study to determine amount of potable water and water quality. Identified aquifer.
1992-1994: Funded “Fishers Island Water Supply & Watershed Study” in conjunction with Suffolk County Dept of Health Services. The Conservancy's Ed Horning led the ecological component of this major study.
1994-current: Sought to eliminate the disposal of excessively contaminated material in Long Island Sound waters. Brought suit in 1995, settlement reached in 2002. One outcome: the EPA initiated a formal designation process for dredged material disposal sites for Long Island Sound, a process which continues.
1995-current: Raised level of awareness of pesticide use on golf courses, lawns and near water sources.
2003: Nature Days established.
2005-current: Promoted No Discharge Zone for boats in FI waters.
2006: Expanded the water quality monitoring program for FI harbor waters.
2006: Developed and Implemented pilot program to control the invasive reed Phragmites in a 2 acre wetland site.
2008: Members of the Conservancy were active in opposing the proposed Broadwater LNG project.
